ASU's Post Doc student Fernanda Festa was recognized this year as one of the Phoenix Business Journal's "40 under 40." Every year, the journal seeks out the individuals that are taking major strides in their career while making a positive impact in their communities.

Muscle memory is one of the most important things that a drummer can cultivate. Muscle memory is what dictates force and rhythm when a person is playing the instrument, making it a quantitative factor in success. What is odd about muscle memory is that it is not something that you consciously develop. Instead, it is the result of hours upon hours of practice and performance.

Inspired by the loss of one of her best supporters-her grandfather-to a brain tumor, Festa has dedicated her life to solving the cancer problem. Beginning with obtaining a doctorate degree at the University of Sao Paulo, Festa joined Joshua LaBaer's team in Boston to start her postdoctoral research.

Senioritis can cause otherwise successful students to falter and run into complications in their last semester of school, during that final stretch of time when all they need to is hold on for a few more weeks of schooling until they can put aside the textbooks and Arizona State apparel forever.

Whether it is doing exercises or working on a particular piece, this kind of repetition is what will guide success in this area. At this point in time, it may be helpful to look to the way that the brain functions as people are engaging in activities.

Festa's dedication and experience are truly inspiring to those that hope to join her in the field. She's showing by example that real changes are happening. Tools are developing that will one day make early detection and prevention of cancer even easier than before. This isn't all that's getting done.

The cancer research field is on fire as researchers around the world continue to put the pieces together in the ever enlarging puzzle of cancer. People are making headway though, and that's bringing hope to millions of people worldwide.

That is why people who stop playing the drums for a couple of weeks are going to have a harder time getting back to their skill level, and why they need to warm up for longer periods of time. It is all about the reflexive recall that the brain is able to make in connection with the activity.

She represents the dreams of what higher education is designed to do: create helpful professionals that make a difference in the world. Maybe one day, she'll be able to stop cancer in its tracks, making it a disease of the past for mankind.

But it may be necessary for a senior college student to do more than simply plan out breaks every couple weeks of their last semester. And one of the best ways to do more than simply plan out vacations to avoid senioritis and to remain focused on the tasks of the last couple weeks of school is to begin mentoring a freshman student.

There are many colleges that have major music and drumming programs. If you are interested in enrolling in a college drumming program, all you have to do is look around and see what colleges have the best programs.

Students honor these men and women making a difference with their Arizona state clothing. It's with pride that they tell the world that this university is making a difference with its students. Education is working. You can see the evidence in the types of people it produces every year.
